" Non-Timber Forest Products" is a catch-all phrase that includes any product obtained from the forest that does not
require the harvesting of trees.
For simplicity sake, the JTGA is currently compiling information on trees, shrubs and plants that are most popularly associated with the production and harvesting of Non-Timber Forest Products. This list may include wild or cultivated medicinal plants, fruits and herbs. Some of those commonly found in Jamaica include:
Pimento, Ylang-ylang, Bitterwood, plus many others which have been popularly used for the production of "Roots" tonic beverages.
As scientific research involving Jamaica's vast number of endemic species is still in its relative early stages, there is also the distinct possibility that derivatives of these plants may hold a useful treatment for existing ailments/diseases.
